Understanding School Can’t: An online webinar for parents and caregivers

This course is for parents and carers who want to increase their confidence in navigating School Can't to enhance their child's participation at school.

About this course

Is your child experiencing difficulty within their school participation? School Can’t can be an incredibly difficult obstacle for many families to navigate in working towards their child’s successful participation at school. Building a parent/caregiver's understanding of why a child might be experiencing challenges in attending and participating at school, learning to identify early indicators, and learning how to collaborate with their child’s school are foundational for developing a plan to enhance a child's school participation.

This webinar will be delivered by Caitlin Cowie & Josh White, two of Kid Link’s senior OTs who have extensive experience within this area.

What You Will Learn

To understand why it is referred to as School Can’t rather than School Refusal.

To understand the evidence and theory regarding school can’t.

To understand the relationship between a child’s mental health and School Can’t.

To build your understanding of the factors which contribute to School Can’t for a child.

To build your awareness and confidence in identifying early indicators of School Can’t.

To build your understanding of the supports available in relation to School Can’t.

To develop your confidence and competence in gathering information on the demands and skills contributing to School Cant for a child to support in developing a plan.

To have a framework to support strategy choice and implementation to support school engagement.

To have a toolbox of practical strategies and resources to use to assist your child’s success in the school environment.

2.5 hour webinar that includes relevant theory, evidence, practical strategies to be used at home and in collaboration with schools, and mini case studies.
Access to the recording for 90 days following the presentation.
Corresponding workbook to be guided through during the presentation to gain practice with resources and apply learning.

Hi, I’m Josh, and I’ve been at Kid Link since 2020. As an OT I value collaboration, and creating a safe space for my clients to share their thoughts and work towards achieving outcomes meaningful to them. My key interest areas include Mental health, collaboration with schools to support funding applications and assist schools to understand their students needs, executive functioning, and collaborating with a child on their own social goals. I currently hold a caseload of children between the age of 5 and 18. In addition to my clinical work, I develop and present webinars and in-person presentations, supervise internal and external OT’s, and lead Kid Link’s school consulting service. Hi, I’m Caitlyn, one of the Senior Occupational Therapists at Kid Link. I joined the KL team in 2017, and am passionate about sharing knowledge across different areas, especially mental health, social success, and school inclusion. As a part of my role at Kid Link, I hold a caseload of 4yo - 18yo, lead presentations, supervise KL OTs and external OTs, and manage our University student program.
